The Joy Bistro/Gallery 888 Painting
This post is a quick update. As promised, I’m giving you a more detailed look at this painting already described in post #2 About Gallery 888. The owner of the painting kindly sent me some jpgs with greater resolution so we can appreciate the details of this charming piece. Although the artist is unknown to me, I might guess that he/she has a charmed world view and very good eye for composition.
In reality, the restaurant is on a corner of Queen Street East with the outside patio facing the side street on the west. At the time, there was a rather ugly open space between the bistro and the gallery on its right. …. The artist has attached the bistro to the right of the gallery and has cleverly made the focal point of the painting the strong yellow door in the lower third of the canvas, just off-center. The diagonals lead us into the doorway to which contrasting paintings on the interior wall arrest our eyes. The wrought iron grill work is well observed and the wonky angles do not matter. Can you not just imagine sitting in those plastic chairs with a glass of pino on a sweltering day! Well, well done!!

This is a really sweet painting. You ought to add a picture of the Bistro/Gallery for comparison’s sake!

A fun depiction of the 888 Gallery and its neighbour! As you say, Pat, we easily projects ourselves into this crooked space. No real need for faithful perspectivism! Gitte.
