Imprints: Acquiring Moksha

Mewar Region

In Rajasthan, a state in north-western India buffered from Pakistan by the Great Thar Desert,  the land of the Rajahs, of the Moguls, of valiant Warrior Clans and interminably powerful Fortifications and opulent Palaces … is Udaipur, the last capital of the Mewar Kingdom.

Armed with romantic images and tales from The Lonely Planet Journeys, “In Rajasthan” by Royina Grewal and with my art history studies of Mogul Painting, I soon realized that my impressions were going to be made through the glass windows of the tour bus with my digital SLR. Not to be daunted, here is a wonderful, small event I was able to capture …

These pictures which tell a story were taken early in the morning on the way from our Oberoi Hotel to the Maharana’s City Palace (another story).  … Just a little roundabout filled with cows and other animals on the out skirts of the city center. I moved the camera and saw this woman sitting on the curb with a pile of fresh grass. A young man on his motor cycle pulled up beside her, stopped, dismounted the cycle and bought a handful of grass from the woman. He proceeded to walk to the roundabout and presented the grass to the cows. This is good karma. The woman has earned some money, the cows are fed, and the good deed by this man will help him stop the cycle of rebirth and put him on the path to Moksha, the Hindu word for Nirvana. A small glimpse into an aspect of Indian society!
